ESSENTIAL SHORINJIRYU KENSHIN KARATEDO"Spiritual Development of Individuality in Mind and Body"KOBUDOliterally means, ’ancient military art or way’For weapons training (Kobudo) students are instructed in the essential
weaponry & techniques of the shinai and / or bokken (bamboo / wooden swords),
bo (6ft. staff), jo (4ft. staff), sai (scythe), and tanto (knife). Study
includes both individual exercises (kata) and training with a partner(s)
(kumite). Students are encouraged to study only one weapon, in a discipline of their
choice; until they attain a significant level of competence. However, for study
& training in self defense fighting with a knife (tanto goshin jitsu) as a
class, everyone participates.
For Kobudo Training, students may choose to wear the Hakama and keiko-gi
(black or indigo), or the traditional white, karate-do uniform (Gi). Hakama and
keiko-gi are robust versions of the formal samurai clothing of the 18th and
19th centuries. They are worn during Kobudo practice to emphasize the formality
of occasion. Kobudo Training is meant to be more than just physical training,
and the choice of clothes emphasizes this. Additionally, the clothes add grace
and dignity to an already graceful and dignified art.
